Backgammon - The Ancient Game

Posted October 24th, 2006 by Kevin Allgood

A quick search on backgammon provides some interesting results. backgammon is an ancient game that is played all over the Middle East.

Everywhere we’ve been in Turkey, people are playing this game. Backpackers play it at their hostels and hotels, and people both young and old spend hours playing in tea houses, nargileh cafes, parks, and bars.

This is the sound of men chatting and playing backgammon while drinking tea in a tea house just below our hotel in Diyarbakir. You can hear the roll of the dice and the clacking of the pieces as they move them along the board.

Have you guys learned (or did you know) Backgammon? We played it a lot in the Navy and I loved it. The game can swing back and forth really quickly. It’s been such a long time since I played it, I can’t give you any pointers. Enjoy the game!

I have to admit that we still don’t know how to play! We feel like we should know, but still don’t. We have a small board now and will be playing lots soon I’m sure, we’ve just been sticking to chess.
