The Market in Dogubayazit

Posted October 24th, 2006 by Kevin Allgood

After the long month of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate with a holiday called Bayram. Children go door-to-door asking for sweets, and previously fasting adults celebrate by visiting friends and families, eating and drinking in daylight, and taking the day off work. In Dogubayazit on the last day of Ramadan, the pre-Bayram market was heaving, filled with shoppers buying everything imaginable.

I recorded this sound while walking through the market. You can hear the shoppers haggling with vendors, sellers shouting out their deals, and several attempts to engage me in conversation. Because I was recording I had to just wave them all away, not always an easy task! The clip is about five minutes long, but I didn’t know how to shorten it. So close your eyes and imagine yourself squeezing through the throngs of shoppers, wooden vendors’ carts, and cornucopia of wares as you make your way through the buzzing marketplace of this town on the frontier between Turkey and Iran.

We get an error on both computers when trying to open the Audio files. The Video files open fine with sound. Any suggestions?
