Brooks - hearing about these things first-hand always makes them so much more tragic than when you just see it on the news. It is indeed crazy out there.

Lindsay - Thanks for your nice comments, as always! We felt challenged by our visit to Burma more than any other country so far, so it's very reassuring to hear that our blogs have had an impact, however small.

Oddly enough, I had a conversation with an Indonesian co-worker of mine about his life growing up being a Chinese transplant in Indonesia - How the gov is so corrupt and they have to hire soliders to protect their houses from locals who want to kill them - it's crazy out there.

His family had to flee to Singapore at one point during 97' because of the events in Jakarta.

Hard to stomach that these things still happen around the world.

Good Post!

thanks for the sobering writeup. it's certainly a difficult and complex situation in that country, and has been for some time. for an intimate look from another perspective, i highly recommend the book "Instinct for Freedom" by a friend of mine, Alan Clements. More info here http://www.worlddharma.com
