Searching for that perfect beach
Posted March 18th, 2007 by Kevin AllgoodSo we’re in Thailand. We were in Bangkok for a couple of days, but didn’t manage to do any sightseeing. All we did was figure out which beach we wanted to get to, how to get to it, and then buy stuff you would want to take with you. In three days we were out and on our way to Koh Phan Ng, party central in Southeast Asia.
We’re not so much into the party scene, but came for the northeast corner of the island’s tranquil, relaxed beaches. After a few days on the island it’s safe to say this is pretty much what we were looking for. Getting here was pretty easy, except for a minor problem involving me leaving my tripod on the train (which arrived at 4am, my excuse), and then spending almost an entire day retrieving it from a town only 150 kilometers away. The wacky, exhausting adventure took about ten hours, and will be explained in detail in due time.
Just because we may be on an island in the Gulf of Thailand doesn’t mean that we are away from modern conveniences. I’m typing this post now in an air-conditioned internet cafe that is nicer than any we used during our time in Nepal or India, possibly even Egypt or Turkey too. So we’ll be catching up on posts over the next couple of days, and we also plan on outlining the next few stages of our trip. Don’t expect too much, however: we’re on an island paradise, after all.

i spent the whole quarter studying amphetamines and opiate microeconomics. i wish you would’ve been there two weeks ago. I needed some time series data for amphetamines at different levels of the trafficking flow in Bangkok, one series in local high schools, one series in the ghett, and one series in a smaller town. I also needed to know how much an ex-junkie returnee prostitute NOW pays for a fix (and chemical analysis of his/her stash too) and the general mix of the speedball. You could’ve been life savers. the UN APAIC is there. they could’ve hooked you up probably. totally could’ve saved my quarter. I had to use NORWEGIAN research! Blech!

So, two nights in Bangkok and the world wasn’t so much your oyster?
Too obvious?

Chocobuns, I’m at a loss. How could we have not saved your quarter? What terrible friends we are!
New goal: communicate better with chocobuns.
Matt the Great, we’ll explore Bangkok when we come back from the beach. With sun ‘n’ sand on the brain, it’s hard to think of anything else. Although now with sun ‘n’ awful sunburn on my back, I predict a full-on Bangkok oyster shucking in the very near future. (Preferably the indoors air-conditioned and aloe-lathered kind of oyster. Yikes.)
